In crew racing shells, the foot stretcher attaches the shoes, providing a surface for the rower to push off. Background research, collected from patents, rower surveys, and safety requirements, identified several aspects of current foot stretchers that could be improved. A design was developed using solid modeling and axiomatic design, analyzed using FEA, and machined using CNC. User testing was conducted to ensure ergonomic and power requirements were met. Based on the results of testing 8 rowers, and design analysis, this project’s design was found to make the rower more comfortable, regardless of gender, ability, and rower size. Furthermore, it improves the rower’s ability to adjust to his or her own physiology, without decreasing the power output of the rower.
