The Cognitive Tutor Authoring Tools are intended to make Tutor development easier and faster. The model-tracing algorithm is used in the Authoring Tools to trace the student actions and provide appropriate feedback to the student. In this paper we describe our implementation of the model-tracing algorithm in JESS1 and also present an experimental evaluation of the run time performance of the model-tracing algorithm in two different production rule systems, JESS and TDK2. According to our study the implementation of the model-tracing algorithm in JESS is slower than that in TDK but is acceptable for most of the tutoring purposes. Also, the implementation of the model-tracing algorithm using JESS’s native backward chaining outperforms that in TDK.
