Caterpillar is searching for a mechanically simple design that allows a medium wheel loader to be towed away in emergencies. The design should consist of a tow hook and an actuation system that would allow the parking brake to automatically release once tow force is applied. Caterpillar have asked students to develop this design, but they were unsuccessful due to a range of simplicity issues for the customers using the wheel loader. A mechanical design is valued due to its dependency as opposed to the current electrical and hydraulic system.
