Integrated Pest Management for Mosquito Control in Massachusetts

Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) is a rare but fatal disease transmitted by mosquitos. West Nile Virus (WNV), also transmitted by mosquitos, is more common and symptoms of severe cases include coma, muscle weakness, vision loss and paralysis. There are currently no treatments for EEE and WNV. Pesticides are one of the most common management practices used to control mosquito populations and limit human risk of EEE and WNV. Pesticides have the potential to harm nontarget organisms, and the environment. This project researched EEE, WNV, pesticides, integrated pest management, mosquito control projects, and mosquito management options in Massachusetts. Results were used to develop a decision tree to help decision makers choose which mosquito control options are best suited for their county.
