Process Simulation of Mono-Layer Super Abrasive Grinding Wheels

Grinding is a machining process where complexity of the process lies in the microscopic interaction of the wheel-work piece contact zone. Saint-Gobain gave the opportunity to study the grinding process, specifically the interactions and performance of super abrasive wheels. Experiments were created, changing the input factors (grain geometry, cutting depth, and wear) interpreting the outputs (force and side flow) and defining the quantitative relationships. 50 experiments were selected and tested, from which quantitative equations were derived for the Force in the X & Y direction as well as Side Flow Height & Width. Using the resulting data current grinding parameters, that simulate a grinding wheel interacting with a work piece material, can be updated and optimized.
