Heat Sealing Fundamentals, Testing, and Numerical Modeling

Heat sealing is a critical process for product packaging. Understanding the effects of controlling process parameters on seal quality and product integrity is essential in both package and manufacturing protocol design, and seal effectiveness. To optimize the conditions for selected materials, process knowledge is needed, along with supporting computational and experimental tools. Using heat transfer fundamentals, 1D/2D numerical models were created in MATLAB and ANSYS to predict temperature distributions within critical material layers and evaluate seal adhesion. Computational models were validated using an original experimental methodology designed and built by the team. Ultimately, a unique framework to assess and index the overall seal quality in industrial settings was delivered.
