Disease Containment Protocols for Confined Environments

Norovirus is a disease that causes gastrointestinal illness and is known for causing outbreaks on cruise ships. In this project, containment protocols are created and evaluated using a computer simulation to determine which containment strategies are effective at preventing the spread of norovirus. This top-down agent-based simulation is carried out to study person-to-person interactions and analyze environmental factors that contribute to the propagation of the virus. After the simulations had been run, the containment strategies were analyzed in terms of how effective they were at preventing infections, how cost effective they were, and the impact they had on passenger experience. Finally, the best strategies are combined and analyzed to suggest the most effective containment strategy.
