The purpose of this IQP was to investigate the technology of stem cells with emphasis placed upon the ethics and legalities that regulate stem cell research. This was achieved by analyzing the applications of stem cells, considering its ethical issues, and examining the world legal stances on stem cell research. The findings indicated that adult stem cells have already been used to save lives for over 35 years, while most embryonic stem (ES) cell applications are based on animal research. We concluded that the five major religions in the world approve of adult stem cell research, but ES cell research is opposed by Christianity and Buddhism. Furthermore, the legal restrictions placed upon ES cell research by conservative countries hinder the advancement of stem cell therapies.
