The Baja SAE competition is held annually by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in order to give students an opportunity to design and build a competitive off-road vehicle. In this competition every team uses the same 10 HP engine. In order to gain a competitive advantage over teams using traditional drive trains, this MQP designed and implemented a hybrid-hydraulic drive train in an existing Baja car. This system allows the car to continuously run its engine at maximum power and store excess energy generated by the engine for later use at the driver's discretion. It is located in series with the engine and main drive shaft and consists of a hydraulic pump, motor, and accumulator. This system was field-tested to verify design calculations and prove the benefit of the system.
