The healthcare field is a dynamic environment that can greatly benefit from the inclusion of IoT devices and technologies. Two specific recurring problems in the healthcare field are those of wandering and preventative falls that often occur in the Alzheimer’s and Dementia population. In this project, an IoT device was designed and created to replace a conventional walker, named the SmartWalker. The intent of the SmartWalker is to alert a nearby caregiver if a patient is exhibiting behaviors that lead to falls, so that the care provider can intervene and prevent a fall from occurring altogether. The SmartWalker integrates various sensors and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication to successfully achieve this task.
