The objective for this Major Qualifying Project was to apply lean process improvement methods, inventory management and financial analysis to a privately held manufacturing company. A review of the state of the art revealed methods to improve many of the processes employed at Sheppard Envelope Manufacturing Company, including warehouse operations and inventory control methods. The methods used include Axiomatic Design for warehouse design, Economic Order Quantity and inventory metric calculations for inventory management database design and Analytical Hierarchy Process for inventory software recommendations. The project results recommend an automated inventory management system and a redesign of warehouse organization, which may result in significant return on investment if implemented.
