The purpose of this project is to monitor whale vocalizations in an efficient manner. This involves several units monitoring sounds beneath the ocean surface using hydrophones, and analyzing them using a DSP chip. These units are designed to have a marketable version that could be located in buoys. Whale vocalizations, or signals of interest, will be identified and information about each buoy's identification will be recorded on a single master buoy. The communication between the multiple units is handled though long range radio frequency radio units. Metrics such as time of arrival, duration, GPS time and GPS location are stored on the mater unit for later analysis such as further species identification or location triangulation.
