The Assabet River and Phosphorus Removal Options

The water quality of the Assabet River has declined due to eutrophication. In response to this issue, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection placed a seasonal limit of 0.1 mg/L of phosphorus for the effluent of all major publicly owned wastewater treatment plants that have outfalls on the river. Due to these new restrictions, these WWTPs have to upgrade their systems, usually through new equipment, to adhere to these new laws. Three phosphorus removal technologies were compared with both performance and economic evaluations.
