When accessible and fully charged, fire extinguishers are an effective and proven means of fighting a fire during its early stages; however, fire extinguishers located in academic institutions are subjected to costly vandalism and tampering that threatens their usefulness in time of need. The problem is that it is unknown how often or to what magnitude each of these instances occur. This project utilized historical data to estimate the total number of incidents where fire extinguishers were beneficial in providing life safety and property protection as well as the total number of incidents where fire extinguishers were used in vandalisms. Each database was then scaled in order to better understand the potential costs and benefits associated with installation of fire extinguishers.
