Developed to help decrease the vehicle density rate in the San Juan Metropolitan Area, the Tren Urbano is Puerto Rico's urban train system. in addition to alleviating traffic problems, the Tren Urbano can have other positive impacts upon the quality of life in Puerto Rico. The Commonwealth currently places immense burdens on landfills. To address this crisis, Puerto Rico proposes to recycle 35% of solid waste by 2006. The Tren Urbano will help promote this environmental initiative by developing its own recycling program. The goal of this project is to research and recommend possible recycling opportunities for the Tren Urbano as well as promote participation, education and recycling awareness in the surrounding communities.
