Recent advances in medical technology have led to a gap between medical treatment and our ability to deal with the consequent situations. Life can be prolonged via life support to the point where it is of dubious quality, and no guidelines exist to indicate when its withdrawal is legal or ethical. By examining the legal, ethical, social and historical context of the debate over withdrawing life support, we develop a set of guidelines to deal with this issue.
