Through a process of trial and error four lab modules were created to fill a gap in WPI's undergraduate physics optics and photonics lab PH2601. The first is a pre-requisite module that serves as an introduction to using the equipment and data analysis of spectra. The three other separate modules then are: measuring the attenuation coefficient of water, constructing an energy level diagram of Ho and Er doped glasses using absorption and fluorescence spectra, and band gap measurements of Si, InP, and As2S3.
