The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) was chartered to protect consumers from dangerous products through, among other things, product recalls. The commission measures the effectiveness of public notification methods through monthly progress reports. We discovered problems with the current monthly progress report through interviews with CPSC staff, industry, and law firms. Analysis of the Compliance recall database helped us determine, the validity of models to calculate effectiveness statistics. Our results give the CPSC valuable information to improve recall effectiveness.
