Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) is a World Trade Organization agreement designed to enforce a global standard of Intellectual Property Rights. There is strong concern of the negative impact the TRIPS standards have on the pharmaceutical industries in the developing world. As of 2005 all countries in the WTO have to protect both product and process patents on pharmaceuticals, which prevents developing countries from making generic versions of essential medications needed to maintain market competition and meet public health demands. However, Bangladesh is the only least developed country with pharmaceutical manufacturing capability, and under the Doha waiver is the only country in the world that can still produce generic versions of new essential medications.
