Two symmetrically substituted 2,5-diarylidene cyclopentanone compounds, bis-DMAB and bis-DMAC, were synthesized and their solvent dependent photophysics studied. UV-Vis absorption spectra, fluorescence emission spectra and fluorescence quantum yields were measured in acetone, isopropanol, and toluene. Absorption maxima showed little solvent dependence for either compound, however fluorescence maxima were significantly more solvent dependent. Quantum yields and fluorescence lifetimes were found to be solvent dependent and trended differently for the two materials. The excited state solvent dependence is not yet clearly understood but a preliminary mechanism based on experimental results and molecular orbital calculations suggests greater solvent interactions with the first excited state.
