OPTIMIZING A CATHETER FOR ENDOSCOPIC DELIVERY OF POWDER

Endoscopic powder delivery is achieved by passing a catheter connected to the delivery device down an endoscope. Procedure failure due to kinking and clogging must be avoided. Three design components, a Luer Lock fitting, a catheter, and tip modification, minimized kinking and clogging. Flow Analysis was performed on the Luer Lock connection, mechanical testing was performed on the catheter material, theoretical calculations and functionality testing were completed to determine the optimal fitting, catheter material, and tip modification. The results show that the custom Luer Lock connection performs better than commercially available components, Material Y is the optimal choice for the catheter, and the tip modification prevents clogging when passing the catheter through a wet endoscope.
