This study, prepared for the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras and the National Sea Grant Program, examined the impact of urban sprawl on the coastal resources of the San Juan region of Puerto Rico from 1977 to 1995. Information on urban expansion, flood plain location, river discharge, and natural resource inventories were analyzed statistically and through Geographic Information Systems software. The assembled data gathered in this report indicate that urban expansion is negatively affecting the Island's coastal resources, and a problem lies with the current laws and the enforcement of them. This report offers solutions to decelerate the destructive effects of urban development on coastal natural resources.
