Transgenic animals are artificially created animals containing genes foreign to that species. Their use in healthcare and biological research areas has increased due to their amazing ability to serve as model systems for human diseases, to produce pharmaceuticals, or to produce organs for human transplants. The purpose of this IQP was to investigate this controversial new technology of transgenic animals, and determine its impact on society. Topics such as transgenic animal description, construction, classification, examples, ethical issues, and legal issues were investigated. This project concludes that with cautious oversight, transgenic animals can indeed be made with minimal or no animal suffering, while having enormous potential medical benefit to society.
