Ergonomics can help improve the design of scalpel handles. This project aimed to create an ergonomic scalpel optimized for weight and balance. This was done through user experience testing. Prototypes were designed in SolidWorks, and manufactured with PLA plastic, tungsten and wooden rods, and disposable scalpel blades. Each prototype had different weights. Surgeons were informally interviewed and asked to give opinions on different aspects of each prototype. The feedback received from the user experience testing was used to create the final design. The final scalpel has a screw mechanism in the middle of the model to allow for interchangeable grips and hollowed for decreased weight. The model weighs 50 grams and is made of stainless steel.
