There is a widely held assumption that technological interventions necessarily lead to overall improvements in the human condition. This course will explore the consequences of some of these interventions from a variety of perspectives derived from the context of the developing world. Drawing on historical perspectives of modernization and development, we will examine this assumption and test its validity through the lessons of environment, culture, and human rights. To bring home these points —to make them real— students will assume different perspectives in an interactive role-playing game developed by WPI students, staff, and faculty.
