Solar Arrays at WPI: A Feasibility Study of Photovoltaics on Campus
PublicDownloadable Content
open in viewerRenewable energy innovation continues to accelerate as our nation recognizes the negative impact of fossil fuel consumption on the environment and the contribution of fossil fuel dependence to geopolitical strife and economic volatility. In this project, we assessed the feasibility of photovoltaic (PV) arrays for electricity generation and battery storage for peak-shaving at WPI. We modeled the financial viability of PV arrays at WPI and quantified their potential to mitigate carbon emissions. We found that PV array installation was a sound financial investment and that utility-scale battery storage was likely to achieve financial viability within five years. We recommended that WPI formally investigate both of these options.
