Since 1957, Sellafield, UK has shown varying amounts of radioactive particles in the soil. The group Radiation Free Lakeland was interested in the current radiation levels at and near Sellafield. The mission of this project was to determine, categorize, and map the radiation levels of soil originating from Sellafield and surrounding areas. This was accomplished by using a sodium iodide crystal scintillator to measure the amount of photons emitted by the samples over a given time. When compared to recommended levels in soil samples, the result of this research showed there was a significant amount of radiation in some of the soil samples.
