The purpose of this IQP was to investigate stem cell technology effects on society. Investigated were various stem cell types and sources, current medical applications, ethical issues associated with each type, and legal stances different countries have to regulate this research. We conclude that embryonic stem cells (ESCs) have the greatest medical potential, but the greatest ethical and legal concerns. We support the development of new alternative technologies such as induced ES cells. Three of the five major world religions were found moderately support ESC research, while all five support adult stem cell research. Legal restrictions on ESC research by countries such as the U.S. and Germany have hindered ESC research.
