This Interactive Qualifying Project seeks to incorporate innovative techniques of the digital humanities with traditional methods of data organization in order to produce layered and informative representations of early American voting figures. Using Microsoft Excel and Esri ArcGIS, we have developed a geographic information system (GIS) that allows Massachusetts election data for selected House of Representatives races (1798 and 1800) to be topographically displayed alongside insightful demographical data layers. We have constructed a comprehensive methodology that explains the construction of the IQP's GIS representations and illustrates analytical strategies of map interpretation, in order to better inform and instruct future efforts.
