Abstract

This report sponsored by the Benemerito Cuerpo de Bomberos, the national firefighting body of Costa Rica, presents an evaluation of the carbon footprint of the Barrio Mexico, Paquera, Ciudad Quesada and Heredia fire stations. The project team accomplished this by calculating their carbon emissions between September 2011 and September 2012 using MINAET guidelines and by conducting interviews and observations during visits to each station. Our assessment showed that the vast majority of emissions are produced by the combustion of diesel. Using this data, the team formulated a list of prioritized recommendations for the Bomberos to reduce their carbon footprint over the next decade.
