Currently, manual CPR methods do not provide the consistent and effective chest compressions needed to treat patients. Paramedics use manual methods to administer CPR, and they are confronted with challenges in providing the appropriate force needed to revive a patient with cardiac arrest. Fatigue and the heavy equipment carried by paramedics are some of the typical challenges. The IQP project has investigated manual CPR methodologies and machine-assisted CPR. The group engaged with local EMS paramedics so as to understand ambulatory CPR services and interpret objectives for an improved automated CPR machine. The project contains designs for the new automated CPR machine that is lightweight and has greater improvement over what is available in the practices of EMS.
