Benchmarks for the spatial layout and design of emergency departments (EDs) in Victoria, Australia, were created through a review of pertinent literature, interviews with relevant experts, and tours of six Victorian hospitals. Findings were used to create a Planning and Design Guideline that could aid further ED developments. It contains considerations deemed important by ED staff. Such considerations will enable staff to deliver a high quality of care to their patients, which could benefit the overall community.
