Empresas Ortiz-Brunet Inc. (EOP) has commissioned WPI to investigate the possibility of integrating a glass recycling program into their operation. The high solid-waste production in Puerto Rico will fill landfills to capacity in the coming years. To address this problem, we determined the financial and social implications of glass recycling through interviews and documented research. We analyzed the costs and benefits of a glass recycling operation using break-even and total present value analysis. The need for improved recycling programs is so great in Puerto Rico that we wrote a position paper to convey this need to local government representatives. Empresas Ortiz-Brunet Inc. may use our cost/benefit analysis and community impact data in their consideration of glass recycling as a business venture.
