Our project reduces total cost of ownership of a computer for a blind Linux user. We accomplished this by making an existing screen reader (Speakup) able to communicate with an existing text-to-speech program (Festival). A set of open-source programs are now available that allows a blind user to interact with a Linux terminal without the need for expensive speech synthesis hardware.
