Our team of 4 worked directly with Midori Farm--a non-profit farm and advocacy group--to conduct extensive research and develop a number of recommendations to establish composting systems in Kyoto. We identified and collaborated with many involved yet isolated individuals and organizations via events and conferences, interviewed stakeholders, did geographic surveys, and benchmarked to best practices. We developed a 73-page data-driven report that outlines 4 distinct approaches to solve a societal waste problem: building, collaborating, purchasing systems, and advocating to government officials. Our recommendations help to reduce incineration of organic waste in Kyoto, produce farming compost, and create a system that improves the health and environment of Japan.
