Abstract

The incineration of plastic waste releases substantial amounts of CO2 and terminates the plastic's lifespan, both of which are counter to Copenhagen's carbon-neutral or circular economy goals. Our project team, partnering with Copenhagen Solutions Lab and Amager Resource Center, investigated and analyzed chemical recycling processes in order to develop more circular and sustainable practices for waste plastics in Copenhagen. The results show that pyrolysis is the most technically and operationally feasible process considering the city's plastic waste streams, waste processing system, stakeholder perspectives, and consumer participation.
