Motivation for developing more sustainable energy options has been increasing steadily over the decade. The focus of this project was to evaluate recent patents in the fields of emerging biofuels. In particular, the project emphasizes advancements in ethanol, butanol, hydrogen, and microbial fuel cell technologies. Patents were analyzed to discover the most recent discoveries by leading companies in the given research field. The current state of these alternative energy sources is feasible through gradual implementation into the energy infrastructure. As technology of these biofuels progress, the practicality of their use will become more viable.
