Nurse-patient interaction time is vital to increasing the quality of patient care at any hospital. To reduce time spent dealing with missing medications the West Roxbury campus of the VA Hospital has recently installed a number of Omnicell units. This automatic medication delivery system provides a larger stock of medications for nurses to use in the event of a missing medication. This system also provides a convenient way of tracking the medications that are dispensed. Our project team worked to quantify the success of the Omnicell system at reducing missing medication reports and to characterize the medication delivery process from a nursing standpoint in order to identify areas of improvement.
