Virtual Machine Server Management Tools

open in viewerIn the Zoo Lab at WPI, the Computer Science Department has an isolated network with a Virtual Machine server on it. The network allows experimentation with new research and engineering projects, while also allowing students to practice cyber security defense and offense. The virtual machine server needs to host images for university courses along with images built by students for their practices. To do this, it requires different levels of access for different users, access to a user’s machine without affecting other machines, and the ability to support a rapidly changing user base. The open-source virtual management tool, Apache CloudStack, provides these features. In addition, an agent-based architecture provides the ability to configure the virtual machines within WPI’s network.
