Nondestructive testing of asphalt with use of a falling weight deflectometer is a method by which transportation engineers determine the depth and rigidity of a given sample of a roadway without having to destroy the surface to take core samples. A comparison to destructive testing reveals that the cost-savings of nondestructive testing are high. This is primarily because of the reduction in labor.
