Sepsis is a difficult illness to diagnose due to lack of reliable biomarkers. In an ongoing clinical study at the University Campus, UMass Memorial Medical Center is attempting to establish platelet closure time (PCT) as an early biomarker. Based on specific inclusion criteria, over six months we were able to enroll 12 patients in the study. Analysis of data for PCT and lactate, the current biomarker, showed no significant correlation between the two, likely as a result of large variability in the data and the very small sample size.
