Synthetic biology, an emerging scientific field of research and application, comprises engineering principles to further biology. This project consisted of the pursuit of an authentic synthetic biology research experience in the laboratory, exploring the development of CRISPR/Cas9 editing technology adapted to target mRNA, as well as a concurrent literature study and analysis of the popular perceptions and understanding of synthetic biology, as represented by written media from 2006 to 2016. Together, the work bridges synthetic biology’s scientific and societal contexts.
