The design new porous MOFs derived from 4-(imidazol-1-yl)benzoic acids was investigated to develop materials for environmental remediation. This research addressed (1) synthesis of new 4-(imidazol-1-yl)benzoic acids to prepare new MOFs, and (2) investigation of MOFs to absorb hydrocarbons. New ligands were prepared with elongated backbones and a range of substituents to determine if the structures of MOFs could be modified to promote adsorption of PAH guests. Absorption of aromatic guests by two MOFs was carried out. This study showed that the MOF we developed showed superior sorption of hydrocarbon guests compared to IRMOF-5.
