The goal was to develop a piping modification to allow the Reactor Water Cleanup system at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station to function during a refueling outage. The practice employed to remove the radioactive contaminants before the refueling outage caused nuclear workers to obtain a higher occupational radiation dose. The normal filtration system is shut down during a refueling outage due to maintenance; therefore, it was requested that a piping modification be developed to allow the operation of this system, the RWCU, during a refueling outage. The modification designed connected the RWCU with the Fuel Pool Cooling system, allowing operation of the RWCU during a refueling outage. The modifcation was estimated to reduce occupational dose by 2,000mrem every refueling outage.
