Abstract

The objective of this project is to reduce Anterior Crucial Ligament (ACL) injury during alpine skiing through the design of a novel bracing system to protect the ACL. ACL tears as a result of alpine skiing account for 20% of all skiing injuries (Johnson, 1997). The most common causes for ACL injuries during alpine skiing are Boot Induced Anterior Drawer (BIAD) and valgus collapse. Axiomatic design, which includes two axioms, maintains independence and minimizes information, was used to generate and evaluate design alternatives and final design selection. Tolerances and material selections were determined based on the laxity of the ACL. Finite Element Analysis was completed to evaluate how the device will perform under injurious loads (Dargel, 2007) seen by the ACL during alpine skiing.
