Radiation Modeling using COMSOL 4.1 with an Industrial Vacuum Furnace and Experimental Vacuum Box

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to improve the process capability of an industrial furnace. Experiments and computer models were made to study hearth plate temperatures within the furnace. Modeling results from COMSOL 4.1 were found to provide similar heat map patterns to those seen experimentally. A separate setof experiments looked to experimentally determine the emissivity of relevant materials based on graphite. The data from these experiments corresponded well to published emissivity values.
