This project aimed to design a vertical axis wind turbine for urban use. Throughout this project the wind was analyzed by various anemometers atop the Worcester Polytechnic Institute buildings. Conclusions were made about the behavior of the wind in this urban location. Different turbine types were evaluated with these wind characteristics in mind and it was determined that a new type of turbine should be created. Based off of the found data it was determined that a turbine that incorporated both lift and drag would be beneficial. For this turbine an airfoil would be necessary along with a shroud for protection and increased wind velocities. Then the overall design was created, manufactured, and tested.
