This project extends interest into the photophysical properties of symmetrically substituted 2,5 -- diarylidene cyclopentanone dyes. The focus for this research is on the compound (2E,5E)-2,5-bis(4-methoxycinnamylidene)-cyclopentanone (2dbmxcp). The electronic absorption and fluorescence properties were investigated in a variety of nonpolar, polar protic, and aprotic solvents. The photophysical properties were investigated which involved calculating the fluorescence quantum yields, and the fluorescence lifetimes. First-order radiative and nonradiative rates of decay were determined. Quantum chemical calculations were performed on 2dbmxcp at the DFT B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory for geometry optimization and TD-DFT spectral calculations.
