This project resulted in detailed and quantitative process maps of the Veterans Affairs Boston’s Allergy Clinic in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. Data was primarily collected electronically from the Allergy Clinic and through personal interviews with physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and the Associate Chief of Medicine. Overall, the current consultation process is relatively efficient. However, the process maps show a lack of proper information in the requests for consults, late patient cancellations and patient “no shows” as areas for improvement. Developing a new Request for Consult template for the Allergy Clinic, further e-consult training for PCPs and specialists, and overscheduling patients during times when “no shows” are prevalent were developed as final recommendations.
