This research experimentally studied the connection between the shape of a parachute canopy during inflation and the aerodynamic forces on the canopy. This was done by comparing the aerodynamics of a series of rigid parachute models, which are similar in shape to the flexible inflating parachute, against unsteady aerodynamics of the flexible parachute during inflation. A series of rigid models were designed, manufactured and tested to see if they could replicate the aerodynamic drag forces on a flexible parachute model.
